Kaplan College’s Dayton Campus Launches Dental Assistant Diploma and Computer Networking Technology Associate Degree Programs
New Programs Added to Better Serve Dayton Area Students and Employers
DAYTON, Ohio, May 11, 2010—The Kaplan College Dayton campus is now enrolling students for its new dental assistant diploma and computer networking technology associate degree programs. Classes begin May 12 for the computer networking technology program and May 13 for the dental assistant program.
The new programs are designed to provide students with the knowledge, technical skills and work habits to pursue a variety of entry-level positions in their field of study. Graduates of the 11-month dental assistant diploma program can seek employment in a variety of positions including those in a dental office, clinic or lab environment. Graduates of the 18-month computer networking technology degree program can seek employment in positions including network operations analyst, network systems support, network specialist, network technician, network and computer systems administrator, and network systems and data communications analyst.
“Our campus is dedicated to introducing new programs as the needs of our local community continue to evolve,” said Karen Larson-Reuter, president of Kaplan College’s Dayton campus. “We are now able to offer students even more opportunities for personal and professional advancement.”
According to the Occupational Projections, a report by the Ohio Department of Workforce Development, Research and Analysis Division, dental assistant and network and computer systems administrator positions are expected to increase by 21 percent between 2006 and 2016.
The dental assistant program emphasizes hands-on instruction in the campus’s new dental lab. The lab features Columbia Dentoform® mannequins, digital imaging equipment and practice management software. Students will have the opportunity to learn treatment room care, infection control and sterilization, pharmacology and pain control, preventative dentistry and a variety of other tasks. The dental program concludes with two externships that allow students to apply their techniques to real-world situations.
The computer networking technology program will take place in a classroom and lab environment where students can gain hands-on experience working with updated equipment they may encounter in a job setting. Students will be taught to install and maintain computer networks, troubleshoot hardware and software problems, manage databases and develop Web pages.
The new dental assistant program will be overseen by Kelley Lambert. Lambert, a registered and certified dental assistant, has been in the dental assisting field for more than 12 years. Most recently, she was the office manager at Monarch Dental, a private practice in Dayton. Lambert received her dental assistant certificate from West Texas Dental Assisting School and her bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration from the University of Phoenix.
The new computer networking technology program will be led by Marcia Thompson. Thompson has more than 20 years of information technology experience. Most recently, she worked as a self-employed web application developer. Previously, she was an application developer for Midmark Corporation, a medical equipment manufacturer in Versailles, Ohio. Thompson holds a master’s and bachelor’s degree in computer science from Ball State University.
