Kaplan University’s Council Bluffs Campus Launches Medical Transcription and Criminal Justice Degree Programs

Programs Expand Allied Health and Criminal Justice Offerings

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa, May 10, 2010 The Kaplan University Council Bluffs campus is now enrolling students for its new medical transcription associate degree and criminal justice bachelor’s degree programs.  Classes for the new medical transcription and criminal justice programs begin May 12.

The programs are designed to provide students with the knowledge, technical skills and work habits to pursue a wide variety of entry-level positions in their field of study.  Graduates of the 18-month medical transcription program can seek employment in a variety of positions including those available in a hospital, clinic or physician’s office.  Graduates of the 18-month criminal justice program may pursue a variety of positions including corporate security, corrections or law enforcement (additional police academy training may be needed for law enforcement jobs).

“These programs expand our course offerings in these areas of study to open up a broader range of opportunities for our students,” said Kate Packard, interim executive director of Kaplan University’s Council Bluffs campus. “The criminal justice and allied health industries continue to grow, and we are contributing to the next generation of skilled professionals.”

According to the Occupational Projections, a report by the Iowa Department of Workforce Development, Research and Analysis Division, medical transcription positions are expected to increase by 15 percent and correctional officer and jailer positions by 17 percent between 2006 and 2016.

The medical transcription program emphasizes self-discipline and ethical standards. Students will have the opportunity to learn typing accuracy, speed and competency with the software applications most commonly used in medical transcription.  The criminal justice program emphasizes hands-on instruction.  Students will have the opportunity to practice on the campus’s Fire Arms Training Simulator, a machine designed to train criminal justice students in real-life decision-making procedures.

The new degree programs expand the Council Bluff campus’s criminal justice and allied health offerings.  Current campus offerings include associate degrees in criminal justice, medical office management and medical assisting.
